Intervention #3: Building Academic Vocabulary. . .

Phase 1. . .

• Identify 30 mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies terms for each grade level in grades K - 8 or grades 1 - 8. High schools may wish to identify critical terms for entering freshmen or for students who appear to be lacking in basic subject matter knowledge.

• Have vanguard teachers experiment with the six-step instructional process and student notebooks collecting formal or informal data.

Phase 2. . .

• Based on feedback from vanguard teachers design a protocol for the scheduling of vocabulary instruction and the six-step process.

• Implement the vocabulary program district wide.
